Match Reports  2020On Saturday morning last Kiltha Og U12’s travelled to Blackrock GAA to take on the home side in the Rebel Og East FE 12 Hurling league Division 2 Final. On a beautiful morning for hurling, and on a well maintained Blackrock pitch, Kiltha Og won the coin toss and opted to play with the benefit of the slight breeze in the first half. Blackrock opened the scoring with a point, however a goal soon after by corner forward Andrew Ahern got us up and running. Match day nerves seemed to be holding us back a bit and with scores hard to come by we led at half time by 1-02 to 0-4, aided by 2 pointed frees from the stick of Evan Connolly.
However in the second half, with a few positional switches and a bit more determination shown by Kiltha Og, we started to win the defensive and midfield battles and delivered more ball into our forward line. The pressure was on Blackrock defence now and the concession of frees converted into points by Mark Cody saw us attain a 4 point lead. A great ball delivered into the forward line was superbly finished to the net by Mark Cody to see us open up a 7 point gap.
Our goal keeper Niall Leahy didn’t put a foot wrong throughout and was picking out our midfield duo of Evan Connelly and Tommy Casey time and time again with his puck outs. Our defensive lines of Kevin Geaney, Rory Lynch, Robbie Kelly, Charlie Howard, Finn Connaughton and Jack O Neill were rock solid and giving nothing away to the Blackrock forwards. Our half forward line of Mark O Mahony, Darragh Ronayne and Oscar Smiddy were working hard and delivering plenty of good ball into our full forward trio of Andrew Ahern, Mark Cody and Finn Ansboro who were finishing off the attacking moves or drawing the frees.

When fresh legs were needed we introduced Charlie Booth, Charlie Roche, Conal McCarthy, Adam West and Jack Clifford who all kept the momentum going as we entered the final quarter. A super goal by Charlie Roche, drilled into the bottom left hand corner effectively sealed victory for Kiltha Og who now led 3-08 to 0-07 with five minutes to go. Blackrock, to be fair, refused to give up and came close to a goal of their own when a rocket of a shot hit the crossbar and flew over for a point. Blackrock tried hard for a goal in the final moments but our defensive unit refused to concede any further scores before the ref blew the final whistle with a score of Kiltha Og 3-08, Blackrock 0-08.

Our captain for the day Finn Connaughton, who had an outstanding game received the winners plaque to great applause from teammates, parents and the Blackrock team. Even though we have had a condensed season, this group are a very committed bunch and have made huge progress in that short time. Special mention must also go to Ben Cooney who missed the final through injury but made a huge contribution to the team effort in getting to the final. We expect Ben to be fully recovered for our upcoming Football final in the coming weeks.
